Carl Rohrs' Modern Pen Techniques… Losing Contact

Acorn Arts is proud to present guest artist
Carl Rohrs
Modern Pen Techniques
Losing Contact

Carl has chosen his favorite style to design his first online class around… Modern Pen Techniques, especially the richness of the marks made when the pen loses full contact with the paper. This 4-week course will take you through the full realm of taking a classic italic into modern variations with straight strokes into sweeping upstrokes, rocking onto the corner of a pen, flicks, swashes, additional alphabets and so much more. Designed for the adventurous beginner, to intermediate and advanced students. A basic knowledge of italic is needed.

Classes will run for 4 consecutive Wednesdays in January, 2019. Classes will be posted January 2nd, January 9th, January 16th, and January 23rd, 2019.

Each Wednesday there will be new worksheets available for you to download with the instructional videos. You may watch the videos at any time that is convenient for you, as many times as you like. The lessons will remain posted for the entire duration of the class and we’ll leave them up for viewing for another few weeks until February 13, 2019.

To fully take advantage of the classes some useful homework will be suggested at the end of each lesson. Homework is never mandatory. You can post on the Classroom Forum, accessible only to the participants. On that platform you can connect with your fellow classmates, see how they're doing, but also signal problems and ask for clarifications.  Carl will be checking on your progress, making comments on your pages, and be happy to help out with additional demo's where needed. You'll have the best seat in the classroom but can start and stop where you like, replay the lesson over and over, and still get lots of personal attention. How great is that!

The short list of suggested materials needed for this class, is as follows:

- Strathmore 300 Series Charcol paper, yellow covered pad 11 x 17, OR any paper you prefer that provides a little tooth for writing

- Higgens Eternal or Higgens Sepia Ink are recommended, but try your own non-waterproof inks as well.

- Horizon Pen, Carl’s favorite size is 5/16th. Other sizes are available as well through Paper and Ink Arts

Parallel Pens and Automatic Pens will be shown as well, but it is NOT necessary to purchase them if you don’t have them already

- Straight edge ruler

- Pencil for lining

- Gouache for colors if you prefer to write in color. Carl will be lettering in ink.
